Black and white portrait photograph of Hiłamas, Willie Seaweed shown wearing a chief's headdress with ermine trim

Hiłamas, Chief Seaweed was born in Blunden Harbour about 1873, at a time when Kwakwaka’wakw culture flourished. Seaweed was a singer, storyteller, and artist who kept the traditions of the potlatch alive through the years in which it was illegal. Willie Seaweed was a traditional artist who passed on his skills to a younger generation. Today, his artwork can be found in museum collections all over the world.
